Semester At Sea is a wonderful program! I am so glad I was able to attend the Spring 1999 program. It is amazing to me that 13 years has passed by! Even after all that time, Semester At Sea remains relevant in my life. The learning, growth, confidence, perspective, and life experience I gained during SAS prepared me for many, many, many more adventures! Living in Portugal for 2 years (2005-2007); graduate school (2000-2002); volunteering in Kenya, in my career field (2004); traveling around Europe (ongoing); working as a "traveler" all around the USA in my career field (2007-2009); and now enhancing daily family life and enriching my, and my family member's personal lives. My sister attended SAS for the Spring 2001 voyage; often everyday events or watching the news, will trigger great memories or give us understanding of situations. It is great having her to talk things through with and to support each other with the "out of the box" ideas we have. I believe our experiences with SAS helped develop our unconventional way of seeing the world. I hope my own children will one day be able to experience the world from the structure and expertise of Semester At Sea!

Semester at Sea is perfect for someone wanting to get a better global understanding. People who go to one place, learn a lot about a specific culture, but Semester at Sea allows you to study certain topics (science, art, literature, etc.) and see it across many cultures. I learned about and experiences places I would probably have note gone to alone (i.e. India and Malaysia--and they were my 2 favorite stops!). On top of all this, you have AMAZING instructors; their experience was amazing (i.e., Our history professor met Ghandi, my science instructor was on a expedition that helped map the Atlantic ocean floor, and another professor had been an advisor to the UN). Another bonus was that I got to study next to studdents from almost all 50 states and 11 different countries. Semester at Sea was the best thing I ever did, and everyone else I know who did it, feels the same way.

I chose this program because I wanted to study abroad but I didn't know where I wanted to go for a whole semester. When a stranger (who turned into a good friend) told me about the program , showed pictures, told his animated and almost unbelieveable stories, and said that every dollar is worth it, I decided to go! This program is perfect for the student who isn't a skilled traveler, as they offer a broad spectrum of trips that are led by different faculty. It is also perfect for the student who is ready to jump out of their comfort zone and travel independently, as you are free to roam the country as long as you make it back by the "On ship time" before the ship leaves the port.
The community on the ship is full of all different kind of people which really adds to your experience.
The classes on the ship are most often led by great professors that are very knowledgeable about their subject. I found that the teachers on the ship are the most approachable college professors around. They love to help, and understand the rigors of academic life while traveling abroad.
I would definitely recommend this trip to most people.
From textbook to real life, you are able to apply your knowledge and see it for yourself.
Example:
Classes: Women Studies
Experience: Seeing the gender imbalance in India, poor families only have male children.
Global Studies
Experience: After learning about South Africa, Nelson Mandela, and the Apartheid, I was able to visit the townships and Robben Island!
Weather, Climate, & Society
Experience: Studied climate change and the role of different countries as well as about the different environments we were visiting.
