Paid a LOT of money for something that i could have done myself in half the costs. The pictures of the rooms they have to offer are NOT the rooms they actually give you. I was put in an attic room during summer in Argentina with a small fan, a shit bed with bed bugs and a closet that floods when i rains. The other interns i know have a similiar experience. Bed bugs, no air conditioning, and even one guy moved himself to a hotel to get a decent nights sleep!

The value is not worth what you get and i recommend that you save your money and go somewhere else. They take a HUGE commission for an organiser who i have never seen as he is travelling the world on the money i spent to be here. DO NOT USE REAL GAP

DO NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH REAL GAP. I booked a 4 week spanish language programme with them. The language school was in a completely different location (10Km) from where they advertised. I was dumped in at my homestay family not knowing where I was, wondering why I wasnt in the city I was supposed to be in. Afternoon activities advertised never materialised. They gave me no maps/bus timetables to get from A to B and no help at all. The school is run down, badly organised, unprofessional, and the teaching is awful. There are more staff than teachers. The chairs in the classrooms are like those from 1950s England - hard, small and wooden. There were only 3 or 4 other students learning there and many more staff than students. A sad, depressing place to be,

I paid £800 for this miserable experience and am currently about to pursue them through the courts if they dont refund most of my money.

Absolutely do not sign up for Real Gap's kung fu program in china unless you have been studying martial arts diligently for at least a year before arriving. Our complaint for the program, which we submitted to Real Gap, was as follows:

"We are writing to let you know a number of problems with the kung fu program. These include, but are not limited to, most classes
being unsuitable for beginners, the lack of appropriately nutritious food, the occasional lack of running water for showers, and the
absence of translators in certain classes.

(1) Ability. Our main complaint involves the statement made by Real Gap that, “students of all abilities are welcome to join this programme, to train in a variety of different forms of Gong Fu.” Having both had exposure to classes where this is the case, we feel comfortable saying that the Shaolin class (which is the reason we came to the school) was not suitable for beginners at all. The other students in the Shaolin class had been there from 2 months – 1 year and we were expected to do the exact same things as them – including dangerous acrobatics.

(2) Food. The programme information sheet clearly states that the food provided “will be nutritious and provide a good diet to support the level of training you will be doing.” Miniscule amounts of protein are served at each meal. For anyone who has ever done martial arts, or any exercise for that matter, having sufficient amounts of protein with which to rebuild torn muscle is crucial. Within a few days of arrival, we learned that almost every student at the school had ordered bottles of protein powder from Hong Kong to supplement their diet.

(3) Water supply. Whenever it rains, the water supply is cut off. Given that we are just entering the rainy season and it has rained every day this week, the water supply for showers has been extremely intermittent. As you can imagine, not being able to shower after 7 hours of exercise is unacceptable. Not having flushing toilets or water to brush your teeth also becomes extremely unhygienic after a few days.

(4) Translators. You warranted in your program information: “There will be translators present to ensure you fully understand the movements and forms you are learning.” Since we speak no Mandarin,
this was obviously an important fact for us. Unfortunately, while some of the students spoke a little Chinese and often offered to help the teachers convey what they meant, there was only a translator in one (White Crane) of the three available classes at the school. This obviously makes it difficult to “fully understand” what we’re meant to do and definitely detracted from the experience for us.

Based on the above problems/ misrepresentations, we believe we are
entitled to a refund and while we believe receiving ¾ of our payment back would be appropriate we are open to you proposing an amount that you deem fair."

Obviously what Real Gap deemed fair was zero. Very inflexible and unprofessional company. DO NOT USE THEM.

I went to China through Real Gap last October to do the kung fu programme with them at a martial arts school.

Real Gap assured me that I would be met by one of the school's translators at the airport. I was met by a Chinese taxi driver that didn't speak English. I was driven for 4 hours, not knowing what was going on and just hoping the taxi driver was taking me to the right place. Luckily he did.

On arriving at the school, it was clear that it was run down and needed some work. Accomodation was basic and food was simple (rice and vegetables) but I was happy with this as it was what I had expected.

Real Gap had told me to bring plenty of warm clothing as it was very cold at the school. This was not the case. Temperatures were 30 degrees during the day and warm at night. I would have brought more shorts if they had got the information correct.

Real Gap's website is full of false information and false claims regarding the programme. I went to the school with the intention of studying Sanda (Chinese kickboxing) which the website said the school offered. It turned out that there was one teacher at the school that took Sanda and Shaolin classes. When I arrived he already had a class of students wanting to learn Shaolin so Sanda was not offered. I was told I would have to train in Shaolin and as a compromise, Sanda was offered one day per week!! Towards the end, everyone that wanted to learn Shaolin left so it was just me on my own and I got 3 days training in Sanda. Then a new person arrived at the school who wanted to learn Shaolin so the classes were split two and a half days each per week! I still enjoyed most of the Shaolin training but my point is that Real Gap had assured me Sanda was offered as a full time option, I went to China on that basis, and found out it was not true! This does not even compare to a friend I made at the school who went over to study Bagua. He arrived and was told there was no teacher for that discipline! He had to train all on his own for 10 days until his teacher arrived! The teacher was only temporary, so he got 2 weeks training, before his teacher left! He spent 2 months at the school and received 2 weeks training!!

The website says after 3 weeks you should be able to break a brick in half with your bare hands. Absolute tripe. You don't do any conditioning on your hands so if you were to try this you would end up with broken bones.

The website says trips are organised to various tourist attractions. Absolute tripe.

I was promised by Real Gap that my transfer back to the airport would be free. "Transfer" implies some kind of private transport organised by the school. In fact the free transfer involved the owner of the school driving you to the local bus station, paying about 50p for your ticket and sending you on your merry way! I decided to climb a mountain on my last day and it was agreed the school's taxi driver would drive me to the airport at a cost. He's obviously overworked and he fell asleep at the wheel on the motorway. Luckily I had noticed him dozing off in the rear view mirror and jumped up from the back seat to steer the car before it crashed into the side. I shouted at him and despite all this he tried to over charge me at the airport. I think the owner of the school must take some commission. He wouldn't let me get my bags out the boot until I paid him and he got all these other Chinese taxi drivers to surround me so reluctantly I did.

I explained all this to Real Gap and there was no apology at all. I am a lawyer so I put the pressure on a little and in the end they offered me £100 as a "gesture of goodwill!" That got my buck up even more as it was if they knew they were in the wrong but couldn't admit it and couldn't give me an adequate apology.

Despite everything I've said the school is a great place, situated in beautiful surroundings. If you do Shaolin or Sanda you will learn a lot about yourself. It's very hard work but very worthwhile. I would give the school 8/10 and real gap 0/10.

The school you are talking about I know as I have been there every year since they have been open. I cannot comment on your Real Gap experience as I am not one for using travel agencies, I much rather have the excitement of planning myself and crossing any obstacles when they arrise however I do understand first time travellers and young people booking with companies like Real Gap for assurances that the destination actually exists! I have been to many martial arts academies/schools around China and believe me when I say that the school we are discussing is not run down although I do agree the food is basic but then again what do you expect in the mountains of China! Now for the main reason why I wanted to reply your review, Shaolin/Sanda! All over China Shaolin and Sanda are taught together as they compliment each other, from the Shaolin you will gain amazing leg strength, fitness and most of all flexibility which helps an awful lot with round house kicks in Sanda training, the list can go on and on for the two styles to be taught together. I always attend the school during the summer so I must of just left before your arrival, anyhow for all my time there the Shaolin/Sanda group always mix the training up giving the students a good variety of both Sanda and Shaolin, in fact recently the school has had several students competing in Sanda tournaments! I also find it difficult to believe that there was no Bagua teacher because the Bagua is taught by the internal Master Deng who also teaches Xingyi and Tai Chi. I also find the comment about no conditioning very strange because this school out of all the places I have been to focus a lot on conditioning (all body), when I go there I train in White Crane which over trains in conditioning but on a whole as the conditioning takes up time it is generally done in the students own time rather then taking up valuable lesson time with repetitive body striking! Gosh, I only wanted to say a few lines and have written a small book lol. if anyone wants to contact me about training in ASIA feel welcome...I have also spent a lot of time training in the Philippines and Japan as well as China. Train Hard!
Hi There, a question for hardcore79. Have you ever trained at the Shaolin Temple Academy? How does it compare to other Kung Fu training centres? Which in your opinion is the best overall? Thanks

I went on the Thailand experience trip in 2009 and it turned out to be quite a mixed bag.. First thing I would say is we found out over there that Real Gap is actually not involved in the programme whatsoever and simply act as the go between for the company based in Thailand. Due to this there were a number of wrong descriptions that Real Gap claimed to be the case.
Overall due to some bad luck, the location we were staying in got flooded out, up until this point everything had been fine but here things started to fall apart. With all belongings wet/missing, we tried to contact real gaps emergency helpline since the staff in Thailand weren't doing anything. (actually a 24 hour hotline for an array of companies so that was extremely useless.) Someone also cut their leg open after slipping and we found out that no one had any first aid experience, had to be taxi'd to hospital without any support.
All in all.. I would say that had that not happened then the whole thing would have gone smoothly enough (if a little questionable with some 'descriptions' being inaccurate by real gap). All I can say is that when things went wrong it really showed the lack of support available.
Overall the whole trip was decent and enjoyable, if not exceptional or what's quite expected, i'd recommend going with another company if you can - do lots of research to find a good one.
