I volunteered in Laos for two weeks. I wish I could have stayed longer! Laos is a beautiful country that has so much to offer. The Green Lion Team is extremely nice and always willing to help you with any problem you encounter. From riding a bicycle to school to teaching the lovely kids at school or hanging out with other volunteers at the bonfire, every day was extremely enjoyable. This experience was really enriching and exceeded my expectations. I can't wait to volunteer again in the future. =)

I volunteered along with my girlfriend to teach English at Emerging Voices in Cartagena, Colombia from Nov-Dec of 2019. The experience overall was amazing. We got to work with lots of different groups of people, from young children living in a poor neighborhood, to teenagers learning skills related to the hospitality industry, to adults who’s English was very good, but they just lacked the confidence to use it. I also enjoyed the ability to visit other projects at Emerging Voices such as the project to feed and spend time with the homeless and the sports development project that worked with kids living in a Drug Rehabilitation Centre.
One of the highlights was definitely meeting all of the other volunteers. Programs like these bring out great people and we had a ton of fun hanging out with people coming from all over North America. My other highlight was definitely the food! Sophie was our local Colombian chef and she made the most amazing meals every day. I was always excited for meal time! She also kept the house impeccably clean and even made our beds every day; what an amazing lady! I also enjoyed working with Monica who is the program owner. She is a very inspiring women and a kind soul. We happened to be there during a transitional time for Emerging Voice so that meant we had lots of different volunteers, but also lots of different coordinators. We had three different teaching coordinators during our 4-week stay. One consistent throughout though was Lao. He worked with the childcare program, but he was the only constant in the volunteer house for the entire time that we were there and he made our experience that much better with his kindness and light hearted nature. The last thing that I really enjoyed was the location of the volunteer house. It was located in the safe neighborhood of Crespo; it was only a 5 minute walk to the beach and only a 10 minute cab to downtown so it was truly perfect! All in it was an amazing experience and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking to give back and also push themselves a little out of their comfort zone!

As soon as I was picked up from Cartagena airport, I felt very welcome in Colombia. My ABV in-country coordinator picked me up from the airport and had a sign with my name on it, so I was able to find him easily. My orientation helped me get my feet on the ground and my coordinator spoke English and answered every question I had. Everything was planned out extremely well. I never felt like I had any questions unanswered. I also really enjoyed my volunteer work and my Spanish classes. I felt like I learned a lot. My host family was so nice and was very easy to talk to. My host mother did not speak any English, but it was not hard to communicate with her and after the first few days there were not many miscommunications. Everyone was super nice and the country is beautiful! The tours are very fun and you have the weekend off, so I recommend going to see the rest of the country on the weekends. I knew this volunteer trip to Colombia would be a positive experience, but I had no idea how life changing it would be. My heart has grown three sizes. Thank you ABV for this incredible opportunity to help.

I spend 2 weeks in Cartagena and I was able to participate in different programs. Most of them, teaching English to children's. But they also have programs with elder care, cancer victims that need a moment of joy and kindergarten assistance.
It was a immersive experience and we could connect with the communities and get to know the people who live there. For me, this was the top 1 reason why I loved this experience.
The children's were kind and respectful, eager to learn. So the teaching was natural and easy.
I felt home in our volunteer house. We had dinner together every day and spend weekends travelling together as well. I felt welcome by the city and by all the Colombians I met.

My time in Cartagena was wonderful. I met so many lovely women and men through my time spent at the foundation, especially the women I worked with. Although sometimes I felt that I could be doing something more effective or instantly productive to some people’s lives I soon realized that the need for emotional support and basic health education is monumental too. I offered to give basic English lessons at the end of the group sessions every morning and I was so pleased to see how enthusiastic the parents at the foundation were to learn after not having much opportunity to beforehand. I spent a lot of time with the toddlers too, to make sure I spent as full a day as possible volunteering and they were so adorable and I found it very rewarding to see them remember me and developing character - even over the period I was there.
I think it’s a beautiful, inspiring, sprawling city and country that has a lot of social issues at its core but is fundamentally full of great charming people who make the place so vibrant and welcoming. I’d love to return one day!

My interest on Colombia made me think of a way of visiting the country. I applied for this project looking for a more productive and fun way of spending my last month of vacations. Teaching English in Bogotá ended up being the solution, and it was such a great decision. I had no idea about what was coming and what to expect. Not only it was my first time doing volunteering, but it was also my first time in South America and my first time giving English Classes (notice that I am not a native speaker).
I feel that this experience was great in several ways. I improved my Spanish and also my English, I met people from all around the world and made such good friends in Colombia, inside and outside the volunteers’ house. The volunteering itself was a very eye-opener experience once I got in contact with such a different reality compared to what I am used to in Europe. Besides teaching English, I also had to opportunity to try other projects available in the foundation, they were pretty flexible on trying new stuff.
Colombia is beautiful safe! I had no problems with security on my 4 weeks stay in Bogota, neither did I in other cities. I chose to travel around Colombia with friends on most of my weekends. You can get pretty nice flight deals inside Colombia to visit cities like Medellin or Cartagena. Food is very tasty as I was expecting and most of products and services I bought were half/a third of the price in Europe.
I am definitely repeating a volunteering experience with IVHQ in a near future and Colombia will surely be a place to live a few years. NO JOKE, I’M FOR REAL. The only cons this experience has is actually leaving Colombia and coming back to the regular mainstream life. Good luck dealing with that.

I have been through IVHQ to Bogota on the Childcare Project - once over December 2017/2018 for one month, then enrolled for the 24 week program, that's how much I loved it!!

I think that really speaks for itself!!

I was involved in the Childcare Project, working with troubled youths, which was one of the most rewarding experiences. It has now made me go down a new career path, that I am back home.

Now to Bogota... the culture, the food, the dancing, the people... I felt so safe and really at home. The coordinators really helped with this, they are so, so supportive. The house is in an awesome location - with supermarket, ATM, coffee, park - everything really at your doorstep.

I love Colombia. It is seriously one of the most amazing countries I have EVER seen. I was lucky enough to get to see some amazing parts of the country with other volunteers, as we had time off over the weekends - which we took advantage of.

I can't wait to go back and experience it all over again!!

Thank you to IVHQ for making this all possible.

Jac - Australia.
