Askari WCP

Well, what can I say? Having experienced Askari vicariously through my husband’s stay four years ago (2018 – almost to the day), nothing could have prepared me for the fantastic month I have just completed. While I had some idea of what to expect, actually being here and having the opportunity to witness the beauty and brutality that life at Askari offers is hard to put into words. Honoured to see Rae, the cheetah, on our first drive around the reserve. We were brought to earth sharply within a few days later when she was laid to rest following an encounter with Zamula (lion), the circle of life I guess.

Katie is an absolute gem! Her natural and engaging manner puts everyone at ease and the way she imparts knowledge on a wide range of topics is truly a gift. Our time at Askari has been precious and thanks to Katie’s efforts, thoroughly educational and informative. It is hard to believe how much information in such a short time and we are certainly more comfortable and confident in this environment than when we started.

Being able to soak in the full experience of life on a reserve is a privilege and one I am grateful for. To wake at dawn to see the sunrise, to contribute to the conservation activities at Askari while enjoying the beauty of these surroundings, the shining colour of the African sunset as well as an overnight camp out under the stars has been life changing.

Escaping the New Zealand winter, a trip to Pidwa is an absolute must. If you are on the fence about coming to South Africa, take it from me you will LOVE it! Make yourself, and the environment a priority. Take that leap of faith and volunteer at Askari Wilderness Conservation Programme, you won’t regret it!

International Volunteer HQ (IVHQ)

The experience was incredible! This was my first international volunteer project and having spent a lot of time to find the right volunteer companies I am very pleased to have chosen IVHQ. As a solo female I felt safe and recieved sufficient information for a successful trip.

Upon arrival, there was an orientation where all of the volunteers met and had cultural awareness sessions, got their homestay locations etc. This was also an opportunity to hear from other people who had been in the country prior (not necessarily on projects to quickly learn where has good prices, sightseeing etc).

Staying in the homestay with a local family gave insights which wouldn't have been available had we stayed in hostels etc. I was able to understand Nepalese culture, eat their food and join in with their way of life. It was really eye opening to notice what we take for granted - things like washing machines, AC and even strong carrier bags!

The project itself comprised of women aged 16-60 and the teaching takes place on the roof of a ladies house as unfortunately they dont have a school. The women are so eager to learn and desperately need materials and support. There is no curriculum so you plan the lessons yourself based upon your assessment of the group and we were able to cover maths, english, using a calculator, dancing (just for fun!), singing and understand the challenges faced by the women with lack of domestic abuse support and period poverty.

It really has been an emotionally awakening experience and I would fully recommend anyone who is debating, to go ahead and just do it!

Teaching Program in Bali- Green Lion

The experience in Bali with Green Lion was great! The people and staff are so lovely, polite, and helpful. The environment was so friendly and welcoming. The staff were always there and were so helpful at all times!
The teaching experience was a bit challenging, yet it was worth it. Learning the Bahasa was so interesting. In Green Lion, it is so easy to make friends and engage in different activities. Teaching Balinese students was so much fun and self developing. Creating memories with students has taken a special part in my life!

International Volunteer HQ (IVHQ)

One of the best experiences of my life. I signed up for childcare in Ghana and cannot recommend it enough. Everyone is so kind and welcoming. It really felt like I made a difference by teaching the children in school. For the weekends we were able to make some excursions and see the country and make awesome memories with all the volunteers. Would love to go back :)
