Hi Russell.
I have recently come from Chiang Mai.
Yes, it is traveler-friendly but if you are traveling in the cooler months then air pollution can be a serious issue. Also, the usual precautions apply such as drinking bottled water, avoiding shaved ice and salads, and avoiding traffic. I have traveled to the region many times and always without incident.
For the area around Chiang Mai, I would recommend getting your jabs - best to contact your local clinic to check which ones you need - and if taking any jungle trips then please take with you mosquito repellent. I'm not aware of any particular illness-nuisance active in the area but once again best check before you leave.
Pai is a great chill place and l would recommend taking the trip out there.
This time around in Chiang Mai we stayed in the Lux Hotel and paid only 600 Baht per night.
It's located within the Old Town walls and close to the hotel there are many budget guesthouses.
Chiang Mai is a wonderful city and I hope you have a great time there.
As a single female traveler you would of course need to watch out for the usual run of the mill hassles experienced in any city but generally in Chiang Mai you shouldn't need to worry about personal safety.
There are plenty of other travelers passing through the city at any given time of the year so hooking up with a travel partner shouldn't be very difficult.
Btw, renting tuk tuks and taxis in Chiang Mai can get expensive so renting your own scooter is a plus but if you do then please watch the traffic. It's a great ride up to the temple in the mountains overlooking the city. The green curries are oh so tasty (when cooked properly) and Chiang Mai has a great selection of teas for sale. Mike's burgers sell tasty fare for when you need a Western food fix.

Good health tips. The most important thing when going to jungle trip is the use of mosquito repellent lotion. Nothing is more dangerous than this.
Well, that actually right..
Thanks for tips it would be really very helpful.
Great tips.
I am going to visit Chiang Mai this coming August and I will apply your health and safety tips. I hope that everything will be fine.
Thanks
Health in Chiang Mai isn't a high-risk problem, plus the health care system in Thailand is pretty good where tourists are concerned. There are a number of tropical diseases around, but incidences of infection aren’t alarming. Similarly, personal safety in Thailand is relatively good, as Thai people are generally passive and violence or theft is only a minor risk.
I love to go to Chiang Mai. So Thank you so much for the tips you shared.
I Love Thai food.. so delicious..
