I was extremely dissatisfied with the service I have received from frontier, THEY ARE CRIMINALS AND THE EXPEDITION IS A SCAM!

Below i have summarised my issues with Frontier:

Firstly, the website is very poorly laid out and caused many stresses when areas I needed to complete and things I needed to apply for kept on appearing with no warning - Ie the medical forms. (hidden by the bottom of a page titled something completely different)

Also the 'support' was pathetic, essentially we were just pointed in directions, told they could not answer our questions and told to pay ever more money.

My partner (upon arriving back in the UK was diagnosed as having salmonella) was extremely ill for weeks on the trip and Frontiers 'medical assistance' was nowhere to be seen when some days he was too weak to get out of bed.

Secondly, our trip was all but ruined by our tour guide for the following reasons:

Our leader was essentially socially inept, and made it VERY difficult to enjoy ourselves, this got to the extent that when people realised we were travelling with him they would actually actively apologise.

Our leader chosen by frontier acted very unprofessionally by firstly getting a tattoo in a hostel in our first few days in Mexico.

He would start drinking some days by 11AM - when neither I nor Kipp are really drinkers so felt uncomfortable when he kept pressuring us to join him.

He was smoking weed midday in a hostel which forbade drugs (in a county where drugs are socially hated, and are plauged by drug related crimes and gang culture/violence) whilst my partner and I were very ill and needed some support (food poisoning).

He further behaved inappropriately by taking the numbers of school girls in La Ceiba and bragging about them 'fancying him', just to clarify, these are underage girls, who were put in his care in a school. Trust which he instantly abused.

Making one girl in particular who was barely 16 very uncomfortable to the extent she had to simply ignore him, when he told her she "could be a model" and made several other statements about her appearance and body, and then ccntinued to buy her alcohol against her mothers wishes. (and specific wishes not to do so).

Constantly borrowing money from us and conveniently forgetting to pay us back. Not to mention this 'group' expedition was just myself and my partner trapped 24/7 with such an insufferable individual.

I have been absolutely revolted by all of this behaviour in a county where drugs are such an issue, and to behave in such a way that it made myself, my partner, and others so uncomfortable.

I paid nearly 2000 pounds to frontier towards this trip, that is nearly 257 hours work for me and Im absolutely REVOLTED that the whole trip cost me more than £4000.00 in costs including flights and Visas, and spending money. Yet all I received in return was two measly meals a day, accommodation worth nothing, to be led around by an insufferable individual and to be shipped around on buses. I totalled that it can't have cost more than 500 pounds to keep me out there, and that's a profit of around 1200 pounds. It was an ABSOLUTE SCAM and if I could go back and cancel it I would.

I understand that profit has to be made, of course I under they are a business. But to so grossly take such a huge amount of money from people who worked so hard to achieve the funds to go on this trip.

I don't want to have a responce from Frontier claiming all the humanitarian and ecological work my money is supporting. I went and volunteered in the school, there I saw them hit a child with a broom, and put a baby In a bin bag (blocking all breathing, and laughing as they watched) and neglect these children. If Frontier are using my money to support this then they are equally as criminal.

I had a great time in Fiji. The family is lovely and at the project I loved hanging out with the staff. Everyone is really nice. The homestay had heaps of resources to make my trip easier. Noa, the mum of the family, is a good cook. And you can buy anything else you need in town - especially fresh fruit and vegetables. The only thing I would have loved is a hot shower!

ACCOMIDATION

Very good, any issues/problems I had with the homestay were dealt with professionally. Sarah was a great help in supporting everyone with any queries. Location was great, could walk to work (if the sun wasn't trying to melt me that day) and was even walking distance to the city centre - but again i'm lazy and relied on Taxis. Kava Ceremonies at the homestay made the place very special, and the family was wonderful. Really appreciated the cold shower. Bring extra money for your own meals though, breakfast is very basic - toast. Dinner is interesting, a bit different but any future volunteers should push themself to try it all! Nothing ever tasted bad and even meat eaters were asked if they wanted seafood or not which was greatly appreciated - i feared id be eating fish with heads the whole time i was here but it was largely vegetarian meals.

WORK
I worked with Cover Story Ltd writing for Mai Life magazine and Fiji Time magazine. The organisation is a little all over the place, but you get used to it and settle into fiji time - aka, slow paced life. The opportunities they do give you are amazing, so glad to have worked with them. I've built a lot of confidence having to do so many interviews.

SUPPORT
10++ for this one, Sarah kept an eye on any illness or injury i had, from the tiniest little scrape to a suspected case of strep throat. My health seemed so important here and had a high priority as did my safety.

OVERALL

Amazing experience. So much free time and flexibility for you to go and explore the island of fiji. You learn so much about the culture here, especially as a journalism volunteer. I'd recommend it to all, just be prepared for a difference in setting as it is a low-income nation. This was my first ever time in a low-income (developing) country and it has really opened my eyes but in a positive way.

Spent the last month on a journalism placement with Coverstory Ltd as a Frontier volunteer - a completely unforgettable experience which I would definitely recommend.

PRE-PROJECT SUPPORT AND COORDINATION
Information and field brief ensured my project was exactly as detailed. However, the website could be improved for ease of access to get this information, and would like to have had access to the field brief sooner than a month before the project. Project blogs/videos very useful to give a clear idea of what to expect.

ACCOMODATION
The homestay with a Fijian family was exactly as expected, due to the helpful vlog tour which I had seen before arrival. Was a brilliant way to properly immerse myself in the culture, the family was incredibly welcoming. In addition, the food provided was both healthy and tasty - the living arrangements, while not overly luxurious, are comfortable and practical.

WORK
The staff were supportive, and willing to answer any questions. Felt my experience was worthwhile due to the range of work and responsibility on offer. Only negative would be the initial workload which meant I spent a couple of days without assignments. Though this was resolved by the third/fourth day, other volunteers expressed similar discontent so does depend on the time of month you arrive and how much is available.

OVERALL EXPERIENCE
Staff on project were amazing - very supportive, genuinely caring and willing to go above and beyond. Only other improvement would be that Frontier more actively encourages volunteers to spend time in their location when the project is finished - I didn't think of this, but would definitely have done it if advised!

I have had the best four weeks of my life. The Frontier staff made me feel so welcome from the start. I enjoyed staying in the homestay and felt like part of the family. On my project I got to meet some inspirational people, travel to an island and improve my journalism skills. I would recommend Frontier to all my friends and am thinking of doing another project next year. I have not got a negative thing to say about my experience and I am sad to be leaving. The project exceeded all my expectations. At the weekends we got to travel to many different places and I have made memories I will never forget.
