My 12 year old daughter and I traveled to Costa Rica to participate in the the sea turtle initiative. We had a wonderful time. The trip was a good mix of volunteer work and vacation. Our guides were fantastic and we met some really interesting people. The trip was well organized. Overall it was an incredible experience and I would highly recommend this trip.

I have traveled extensively throughout the US and internationally. This was the best trip ever. It was the perfect blend of community service, vacation play and relaxation. As a solo female traveler, it was important for me to feel safe and secure. The Discover Corps staff was professional, friendly and assisted me with all of my travel plans. Our local guide, Tara, was AWESOME!!! From the minute I met her at the airport, to our final goodbye on the last day, I didn't worry about anything. She took care of everything ... From the pre-planning to anything that came up along the way. Our group was great. There was lots of laughter and fun. Our time with the Turtle Trax organization was incredible. You can watch documentaries about the process, but there's nothing like actually being there to witness it ALL. You really just have to do it. The staff/volunteers were friendly, fun, knowledgeable and let us get involved in every part of the process. The adventure activities were so much fun... tubing down the river, zip lining, horseback riding, rappelling, and rock wall climbing. I ended the trip with a relaxing massage in the spa and soaking in the hot springs. I arrived in Costa Rica as a solo traveler and left with 7 phenomenal friends and an immense gratitude for all I had experienced.
My ten days in Guatemala were amazing! Next Step Travel with Discover Corps offered a wonderful balance between immersion in the culture and volunteering, in this case, working at a local public school. The support was great, the people friendly and welcoming, and the accommodations perfect. Our food was cooked at the home base by two local women and was delicious. Another woman and I were both vegetarians and our culinary preferences were respected and graciously accommodated. We enjoyed a variety of excursions in addition to our daily work at the school that included meeting with a local weaver, taking a dip in hot springs, a bit of shopping, meeting with Peace Corps volunteers, taking part in a mock Mayan wedding, and spending a day and night at lovely Lake Atitlan. The days were rich and intense and it was all too soon before it was time to return home.
Unforgettable trip! My 10-year old daughter and I spent two weeks in Tanzania and it exceeded all our hopes. I was hoping my daughter would learn that she can make a difference in the lives of others, and indeed, she came back sharing with others her experience - the friendly people in Tanzania, and some of the challenges and how we can help. I was likewise surprised by the incredibly welcoming environment, very happy to get to know people in the Rau Village where we stayed, and make a difference in the lives of many students at a local school and orphanage. We, were comfortable, happy, we made a difference, and we also had great fun seeing animals, scenery, and exploring the wonderful country of Tanzania.
Highly recommended trip!
The Discover Corps Tanzania 14-day trip exceeded my expectations. We helped teach English to school children and worked to renovate one classroom. We also visited a local orphanage and took supplies, plus met twice with a local family in their home.
The itinerary was exceptional. We took four major outings: spent a day at a Masai village, hiked the lower portions of Mt. Kilimanjaro, and spend two days on photo safaris. We also visited a coffee plantation, saw two different dance performances, learned how to batik, created a painting and had a bit of shopping.
I left Tanzania with a personal connection to the people and the culture and felt I had helped it some small way. I would do it again without hesitation.
