This past I traveled to China for the first time with Cultural Embrace's Summer China Camp Counselor Program. This was my first time ever traveling abroad and frankly I was extremely nervous about many of the typical traveling abroad worries. C.E. did an excellent job of organizing and preparing me for my first abroad experience. I worked with Julie for my interview and application submission, and she did a great job of accommodating me and answering any questions I had. The program was exciting, convenient, and affordable (being a college student this can be a major priority).

The overall experience of traveling and working with the natives was incredible. Without C.E. I honestly wouldn't have traveled abroad so early in my life. When I was in China C.E. had an awesome orientation first week for all the ESL teachers which allowed us to travel and tour Beijing. With the program we all were able to visit Beijing Art District 798, The Great Wall, The Forbidden City, and Tiananmen Square as a group. It was a great way to start my traveling experience. This trip makes me want to travel and explore the world and how different each and ever culture can be. I absolutely loved ever second in China. Yes there were difficult times, but the whole experience of meeting new people, new language, new country/culture was amazing. And I would highly recommend to anyone traveling abroad to travel with Cultural Embrace.

Thank you for this review! We are happy to hear how memorable it was for you and I'm sure the students and communities you touched feel the same. In fact, we still hear back from these schools requesting teachers from Summer, 2010 to return! Thanks for sharing your time and summer there and hope these memories last a lifetime!

I come to China every year, and this summer, I wanted to do something different. Specifically, something that would actually help the local communities, and the easiest way I knew how would be to teach English there. I googled "teaching in English" and at the end of my exploration online, I decided to go with Cultural Embrace's volunteering in China program because it was the most affordable one that I saw. I just had to send in some key documents such as the fee, a criminal record, health record, letters of recommendation, etc. and everything was set. The application process was actually very simple.

The experience itself, once I actually got involved in the program, was an unforgettable one. Meeting and interacting with the kids in Yantai, a city in the province of Shandong, was amazing. Cultural Embrace made sure that I was placed in an environment that I would be comfortable in, and took care of the living arrangements really well. I didn't have much to worry about before, during or after my teaching experience.

This program was also a great chance for me to meet people from both Canada and the United States, and I made many friends. Everyone bonds really well because you're all thrown into a new and exciting situation. :)

I suggest that anyone who's looking for an adventure of some kind to apply for this volunteering program. China is an exciting country, and I'm sure you'll discover that and much more with Cultural Embrace.

Thanks for your reply! So wonderful to hear how much you enjoyed your summer teaching in China. Are you still returning every year? I hope the fond memories of teaching and the friendships developed will last a lifetime! Thanks for your positive impact on this program!

I sincerely believe that in order to truly know yourself and the world you live in…you need to get out there and experience it! I have had the chance to do some traveling already in my life, but I wanted to do something more than just travel for a week or so and be a tourist. I had been interested in teaching English for a while so I did some browsing on the Internet and eventually located Cultural Embrace. I glanced through the programs they offer and decided the Teach in China Summer Camp was the best fit for me at the time. I was graduating college in May with a degree in Education and I wanted a fun experience but also something that would help me with my teaching.
The application process went smoothly and Emlyn and Julie were both very helpful with any questions I had about the program or China itself. The program itself was very reasonable it was just the flight that was expensive. Once I arrived in China we had arrangements to stay in a dorm in Beijing for our week of orientation. We were provided with meals and cultural excursions until we received our placements. My placement was in Yanqing which was a suburb of Beijing. It was a different pace of life than I was used to but it was nice to be able to get multiple perspectives on the Chinese culture and way of life. I stayed with a host family for one week and then the three other people in my placement site and I all moved into an apartment for the next three weeks.
As far as teaching went, it was one on one in my case. I tutored my host family student for almost six hours a day, six days a week. And in the later weeks I would tutor one student at a time for two hours per lesson. I had a lot of freedom to choose what I wanted to teach and in what way it was delivered. I found that the students were excited to be learning English and even just being around a Westerner made their day. Directly or indirectly every day we learned from each other.
It was nice to not be alone. I liked that I had my one on one time with my students, but I also liked being around other teachers as well so we can plan or bounce ideas off of each other. It was nice to experience Chinese people and culture, but also nice to have other Americans there with you to share the experience. So I felt like the structure of the program gave me the best of both worlds.
I am immensely happy with my decision to go to China with Cultural Embrace. They were very helpful and professional through the whole process and Emlyn even came to China to meet us and make sure everything was perfect with our placements. It was such a good experience that I am thinking of planning another trip with the company…and you should too!

Thanks, Meridith! We are so happy how positive of an experience this program was for you, and know the students and Chinese community reciprocate the same feelings. Would love for you to return on another CE program...perhaps with your students! :)

From my experience as an intern who worked alongside many CE volunteers in Guatemala, I've seen CE consistently go above and beyond my expectations.

It is amazing what Emlyn and her team of coordinators can accomplish for so many individualized trips. Julie Dean, the Latin American coordinator and Miranda Dawn, one of my intern coordinators, were in contact with me almost every day for the month preceding my trip.

Both Dean and Dawn answered all of my questions and managed last-minute changes per my requests. It was clear that they were masters of juggling many projects, but it never ruffled a feather when handling my customized experience.

When I went to Guatemala, CE took care of me from the moment I landed until the day I departed. When I wasn't happy with my host stay, they gave me four other options and let me decide. When I sent the coordinators an email about incoming volunteers or internship responsibilities, they replied usually within hours, never longer than a day.

Though they didn't hold my hand, I feel confident that CE would have done everything in their power to accomodate my needs and concerns if any arose.

In Guatemala, I worked alongside a group of nearly 20 Appalachian State students who came to volunteer during their spring break. The group leaders said their trip was well organized, fairly priced and the CE coordinators made all of the arrangements without any glitches.

From my experience and the experiences of the volunteers I met in Guatemala, the issues mentioned below seem few and far between.

I highly recommend Cultural Embrace.

After graduating from college, I decided to head abroad. I was unsure of all the logistics and paperwork that were necessary to find a job in a foreign country. That is when I decided to use Cultural Embrace.

This organization went above and beyond my expectations. Emlyn and Julie were always prompt in returning emails, and were always willing to answer all of my questions. When my fiance, who also traveled with me through CE, had problems with our visas during the finals week of our senior year, Julie (our Cultural Embrace contact) was there to help us handle the situation. The whole process from application to departure was very professional and helpful. Emlyn, the program founder, even called us the day before we left to make sure that everything was in order.

A few months after we arrived in China, we were able to meet Emlyn personally. She asked us how things were going, checked out our accomodations, (modest apartments on campus) and spoke with our Chinese director about things that could be improved for foreign teachers in general. The support from CE has been much more than I expected.

The only thing that made me hesitate about using an organization to get abroad was the price. I paid about $1600 for the placement for one academic year, but we were able to receive a discount by joining Cultural Embrace's Facebook page. Since I knew someone who already lived in Yantai, I sometimes wondered if I could have made it out here for much cheaper.

That being said, now that I am in China, I have no regrets about going through Cultural Embrace. The price was worth it because we didn't have to worry about anything; CE took care of everything. They provided us with a good insurance package, cultural packets that helped us get to know Chinese cultural before we ever left home, and lots of teaching resources in terms of good websites to use for ideas. I have also really enjoyed being able to get to know Emlyn more as I work with her to help grow Cultural Embrace as a program by submitting reviews and blogs. Using an outside organization to go abroad was also comforting because I felt like there was another party to "go to bat" for me if something went wrong.

Overall, I have been very impressed with this program. There is no red tape or hidden fees; everything was simple for us because of CE's help. From what I have seen, this company is dedicated to helping people see the world because the people who work there have fallen in love with traveling as well. I'm thankful to Cultural Embrace for setting me up with the opportunity to live and work abroad. It is an experience I will never forget.
