I was overdue for a trip abroad and decided that I wanted to add some type of volunteer experience to get immersed in the culture. I chose Cross Cultural Solutions and decided to go to Lima, Peru since they have a one week program there. The experience was amazing! I took my mother with me as her 70th birthday present and she was never disappointed. The home base is located in very nice neighborhood. The living quarters are dormitory style so you do sleep in bunk beds. It did get chilly in the house because they don't have central heat in Lima so we had to bundle up at night. We were in between summer and winter seasons. The water doesn't get hot like we are used to back in the states but it is not bad. Breakfast, lunch and dinner (Peruvian style) are provided. A housekeeper takes care of making the beds and cleaning the bathrooms. After you finish your assignment for the day, the driver will take you on excursions to see the local attractions and you are also encouraged to go out on your own. We never felt unsafe as long as we followed all of the safety precautions discussed in our meetings. My mother and I were assigned to Los Martincitos, a senior day care in Villa El Salvador. There we prepared food and also did home visits two days out of the week. The home visits were an eye-opening experience and one we will never forget! The seniors were all so sweet and happy we were there to serve them. Everyday we were greeted with hugs and kisses. Without the volunteers, most of the seniors don't get any visitors. I had so much fun and so many memories to bring back home with me. I'm thinking about doing Brazil with CCS in a year or so. Yes, I would recommend CCS to anyone thinking of volunteering abroad.

I had always wanted to travel to India. It is a place that seemed so different and adventurous to go. The news coverage in the USA is not always positive about this country. As a result, I was met with horrified expressions and questions such as "Are you sure you want to go there?"
To prepare myself I watched documentary after documentary on India. I was ready to see the country for myself.
The staff at CCS took care of everything. The living situation was clean, comfortable, and had a kitchen stocked with food for snacking on. Within the same apartment complex was the office where the staff cooked every meal for us. It is mostly Indian food, but the staff even included meals from home for those homesick days. When I got sick(just a few days) the staff immediately took me to a doctor, and I was feeling back to normal again in no time. The staff not only took care of us to maintain our comfort, but they also took us on in country excursions. One of my favorite days, we went to a Muslim, Hindu, and Sikh temple. We learned information about each faith from people who actively practiced. The staff also provided travel advice. They told us the best way to get places, and gave us safety advice about the area.
The volunteer aspect was incredible. They cater it to your skills and expertise as best they can. I am a special educator, and I worked at a children's' home for kids with disabilities. The kids there were unforgettable and brought joy to me everyday I was in India, and even on my return home. CCS provides a resource room where materials can be utilized to work at the volunteer sites.
I would like to address the safety aspect, as that was my biggest concern prior. I very rarely felt unsafe in India. Of course I once in a while felt uncomfortable, but not more so than when I am in the United States. Follow basic safety rules, and although crime may sometimes happen, it decreases if you are careful. I felt protected and safe the entire time I was in India.
I highly recommend this program if you are looking for an opportunity to immerse yourself in another culture, as well as volunteer.

I have had some experience volunteering within my local community but little international volunteer experience. Co workers who had participated in the Cross Cultural Solutions Volunteer Abroad program convinced me to give it a try. I have never worked with an organization as well organized and passionate about there work as CCS. The staff in the US and at my home base in Cartago, Costa Rica were excellent. They did a phenomenal job in preparing me for the experience abroad. I made many new friends, from fellow volunteers, staff from CCS and the Director and Manager of the nursing home where I worked for 2 weeks. I remain in contact via e-mail with many of them today. I plan to possibly pursue another placement with CCS at a later date in the future.
CCS is a first class organization and would highly recommend anyone interested in an international volunteer experience to consider utilizing them.

I was looking for a volunteer opportunity to escape the Corporate environment in which I was spending way too many hours. Having gone to school to be a teacher (but not utilizing that degree in my current work life), I searched for an opportunity to work with children in India. I came across several organizations that offered such a program and contacted a few of them to obtain information and references. While I was promptly contacted by all, what most impressed with me CCS was the quality of their materials (website, literature and information sent in the mail) as well as with the sincerity of their employees- they truly seemed committed to the cause that they support. In addition, they provided me with 3 references that responded to my request about their experience (as a woman traveling alone) the next day (the references provided by other organizations either took several days to respond or didn't respond at all). What this meant to me was that the alumni were passionate and excited to share their experience with someone looking to do the same.
And now that I have completed my 2 week volunteer experience in New Delhi, India, I can say that I am SO GLAD that I went abroad with CCS. What I really liked was that there were 10 other mature, career oriented, volunteers who had been supported to volunteer with their company. This way, I was able to interact with others like myself from around the world, as well as be inspired by those younger volunteers just finishing school.
CCS supported us every step of the way and offered great programs, volunteer opportunities and safe community in which to learn and grow. If you are looking to volunteer abroad, I would HIGHLY recommend to do so with CCS- please don't hesitate to contact me directly with specific questions. An unforgettable journey- thanks CCS!

I recently graduated university with a bachelor of education and decided it was time to volunteer abroad before life started getting in the way. So, myself and friend decided to fundraise the money to volunteer in Cartago, Costa Rica in a primary/elementary school. While there, we taught English to students from pre k-6. We helped the lunch lady prepare meals for the students. We also helped with the Costa Rican Independence Day. CCS had many activities planned during my stay that gave me the opportunity to experience their culture. CCS is a very organized program and are willing to help in any way humanly possible. Costa Rica is one of the most beautiful countries and have some of the nicest people I have ever met. I would volunteer abroad with CCS again in a heart beat.
