10 days ago I left a place that welcomed me with open arms, an open heart, and an open spirit. Upon entry to my home in Salvador with Cross Cross Cultural Solutions I did not know what to expect. What I received was love, guidance, and one of the best experiences I have had in my 27 years of life personally and professionally. The Cross Cultural Solutions staff in Salvador was welcomed my personality, yet challenged me to think harder, and to go deeper in my observations of Bahian culture and sysytems.

As a volunteer, I knew my primary goal was to serve the community. However, CCS, they were very clear and also gentle in explaining the needs and the history of the neighborhoods we served in. As an intern studying abroad, I knew my primary goal was to learn as much about Afro-Brazilian culture and education. CCS provided a holistic experience that helped me to reach my academic goals. I was able to visit various types of schools, hear lectures from scholars, attend samba, and capoeria classes... but not just attend the classes, but I learned the history and cultural connections.

The beauty of the knowledge gained was that I talked to the entire staff about the things I was learning and just about life in general. From Maria our amzing cook, to Lulu, to the night staff of Jo and Nando, and of course our guiding lights Gracie, Vinni, and Ivan who guided us daily.

The staff were very professionally and provided the right amount of personal care for me. I consider Salvador a second home and look to visit and stay in touch often. For all those with the opportunity to serve in Salvador, please do so. It will improve your quality of life.

I have volunteered with Cross Cultural Solutions twice-both times in India! There's a reason why I chose CCS over other programs. Their commitment to quality and an authentic experience are unparalled. If you've never volunteered before they will help you every step of the way-if you're a seasoned traveller the country staff encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and experience new things. The country staff are what makes the program! They have their own lives and families, yet I always felt like their first priority. Everyone on staff was friendly and really listened to me. The placements are thoughtful and the staff went out of their way to make sure they fit our needs. The flats were clean and well stocked and of course the food provided every day was absolutely delicious! CCS is worth every penny-you won't regret it, it'll be the experience of a lifetime.

There are no words that describe the effect my CCS program had on me. I went during college; taking a semester and needed a program that gave me the flexibility to experience the culture on my own but who also helped me to foster a relationship with the community.
I went to Costa Rica, and worked in a day care center where I was able to help with the day to day activities as well as paint a mural with the children. The day to day work wasn't a job that seemed as if you were making an impact, but the fact is that by having me a volunteer that allowed the one staff member time to concentrate on improvements. With more assistance, such as myself she was able to cook healthier food and clean more, since she wouldn't be chasing them all over the place. (and I won't lie that running helped me keep off all the AMAZING food I was eating).
My experience totally changed my life, from my experience I fell in love with volunteering! I graduated college and then joined AmeriCorps! Thanks CCS for such an incredible experience.

Guatemala was not my first choice going in to my volunteer experience, but after I spent time there... it would now be my number one reccomendation! There isn't much information out there about the beautiful country of Guatemala, but the culture there is so rich and incredible that it would be hard to imagine any one really not appreciating their time spent there. Cross Cultural Solutions was one of the best things that has ever happened to me. My CCS family and the people that were with me throughout my experience (director, their families, staff, etc) were each so special in their own way and extremely wonderful individuals. I have never felt more welcome and so at home in a foreign place.

Guatemala has tons to offer within a volunteer aspect. I was at a public hospital in Guatemala City at the pediatric burn unit. Although it was the hardest thing I've ever done.... it was also the most rewarding and life-changing thing I'v ever done. Those children changed my life and I truly feel that I also had a positive impact on them during such a difficult time in their lives. I had the support of Virigina (our house mother) along with the rest of the staff throughout the entire process and I couldn't have done it without them. There is so much to learn about the help Guatemala needs and the types of people that are there in the community. It is absolutely incredible and words cannot explain all of the things Guatemala taught me (patience, appreciation, love, family, caring for others, honesty, open-mindedness, happiness, true poverty, hard work, etc.)

During the weekends of my volunteer trip and each afternoon we were able to travel this amazing country and city (Guatemala City) as well as surrounding areas. This country has some of the most amazing scenery and culture than you could ever expect. My friends and family back home were so impressed with the pictures I was taking, but honestly it was really just THAT amazing. I felt as if I were on vacation on every single trip. It truly was a life-changing experience. I can't imagine how things would have turned out if I would have not chosen to volunteer in Guatemala. I would HIGHLY reccommend it to anyone that is looking for an out-of the-ordinary volunteering, traveling, study experience. It's the definition of a hidden gem!! And if you go through Cross Cultural Solutions *which I also HIGHLY reccommend* you will for sure be taken care of and have the time of your life!

Cheers!

Ps- here is a link to my blog if you would like to check out some of my volunteer experiences, the places I traveled to, the friends I made, and the CCS family that took such great care of me!
