This is from Brian and I as we both have very similar thoughts on our experience

Highlights of the trip:

The highlights of our trip was getting to know the workers and the children at the orphanage, we both felt privileged to be welcomed into their home and learn about their lives. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming, which is such a change from Sydney. We loved the fact that this trip allowed us to experience Fiji and disconnect from our lives back home. We both miss Fiji and look forward to coming back in the near future for sure and volunteering more!

Comments on the team, food and accommodation:

Food and accommodation was great! We both were so grateful to be looked after so well and felt like we were extremely welcome. Brian especially loved the food and culture of the family, as being born and raised in Kenya; it felt a lot like home for him. Accommodation was super clean and tidy as well which we appreciated!

Any improvements to help us be better:

Nope – we are thankful for the experience. Thank you!

VOLUNTEER NUTRITION AND PUBLIC HEALTH, FIJI

“From the moment you arrive in Fiji you will be struck by the natural beauty of the islands but equally moved by the genuine and kind-hearted Fijian people”…. these were the first couple of lines in my tourist guide and before landing I didn’t fully understand the meaning of these words.

Today, after the weeks spent with my host family and at the Health Centre, I realized that what makes this place so special are the people who live here. The Health Team was very welcoming and the way they take care of patients and volunteers made me feel like at home.

I didn`t have any expectation from this experience because it was my first time as a volunteer involved in a nutrition, dietetic and public health programme. I can definitely say it was a great experience, both culturally and professionally, and It has been incredibly exciting to help the local team to make a difference in the Fijian community.

I had different work experiences, but this was the most challenging one because I was not used to the environment and the different people`s mindset. Nevertheless, I helped with dietetic one on one consultations during the NCD`s and the Maternal Child Health clinics and I felt like I really could make a difference at the grass root level with the locals, many of whom struggle with diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease. I also had a lot of fun delivering health talks in schools and helping the CCOHSI team during their interesting activities for the community.

Vinaka to everyone, for this amazing work experience and for making me more conscious of what I want to do in the future.

Frontier

I have had the best four weeks of my life. The Frontier staff made me feel so welcome from the start. I enjoyed staying in the homestay and felt like part of the family. On my project I got to meet some inspirational people, travel to an island and improve my journalism skills. I would recommend Frontier to all my friends and am thinking of doing another project next year. I have not got a negative thing to say about my experience and I am sad to be leaving. The project exceeded all my expectations. At the weekends we got to travel to many different places and I have made memories I will never forget.

Frontier

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my project and would volunteer with Frontier again in a heartbeat. I was on the teaching project which was as challenging as it was rewarding (be prepared to be thrown in at the deep end). The project felt well organised but also was relaxed and enjoyable. The other volunteers and staff were all wonderful and were the highlight of my time in Fiji, The homestay was a fantastic experience that I thoroughly enjoyed. Although there was an issue of bed bugs, Sarah dealt with the issue to the best of her ability and was extremely understanding (I cannot praise her highly enough). The food was lovely and all medical issues were dealt with extremely well. Every member of staff was absolutely excellent in every way, they made the whole experience wonderful and should be highly praised. The staff in London could have been more knowledgeable about the homestay, however this was a minor issue.

Frontier

I thoroughly enjoyed my time on the Animal health and welfare project in Fiji.\
Everyone, volunteers and locals alike, were highly friendly and many locals would attempt to stop on the street to chat with you.

The accomodation was basic but suitable. Everyone had their own bed and the food each night was delicious! The tap water was suitable to drink, which meant that hardly any money was spent on drinks at all!
The project itself was enlightening, and very worthwhile. Sometimes the work could be hard, as you would see issues that would be very unlikely to arise in the UK, but the people and animals made everything worthwhile.

The weekends were packed full of tourist-like trips, and it was very interesting to see the difference between "Locals-Fiji" and "Tourist-Fiji".

The project was an amazing and rewarding time of my life, and I made friends with people whom I hope I stay in touch with.

Projects Abroad

One of the best decisions I ever made was to volunteer abroad in the beautiful country of Fiji! I looked at several different volunteer programs before deciding on Projects Abroad. Right away from looking at their website I could tell that Projects Abroad was professional, honest, and really valued their volunteers. I was drawn to Fiji in particular because they offered a unique program for a speech therapist. This specialization was key to ensuring I maximized my impact as a volunteer. I was able to use my skills and knowledge to impact the lives of so many precious children.

Projects Abroad's office was one of my favorite places to go to in Fiji. The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming. I always felt valued, safe, and supported. I knew that if I ever had any trouble I could always come to them. But one of the best parts about my experience was my incredible host family. They exceeded every expectation in hospitality. My house was clean, comfortable, and safe. I had a lot of variety in my meals, got to experience traditional dishes, and had amazing chats with my host parents. I'm even Facebook friends with them now! Overall I highly recommend going to Fiji with Projects Abroad! (Especially if you are a speech therapist because there is great need there in Fiji!)

Global Leadership Adventures (GLA)

Global Leadership Adventures changed my life. Words can't describe how special this program is. You get to swim with manta rays, see islands stretch for miles, laugh and play games with some of the greatest kids you'll meet, and make such amazing friends. I thought this was the perfect amount of freedom mixed with 100% adult assistance for high schoolers. I also loved that this wasn't just a vacation, it was a chance to make a difference. There was the perfect balance between sightseeing and volunteering. GLA understood that we were teenagers who were visiting a country we had probably never been to before and wanted to see what life was like there. The staff that worked with us and our mentors were awesome. I would not change this trip for anything and I will remember it for the rest of my life. I would highly recommend a trip through Global Leadership Adventures to any teenager.

Global Leadership Adventures (GLA)

Last summer my seventeen year old daughter went with Global Leadership Adventures to Fiji. I was not very thrilled about the idea of my daughter going halfway across the world. After researching the program and speaking with a member of GLA I was more open to the idea. Immediately upon her arrival she was able to call and check in and GLA was very good about keeping parents updated with the well being of their children. Everyday there was a post about what the kids did and how they were doing. It really is like the Peace Corps for teenagers. When I picked my daughter up from the airport I realized that my little girl had grown up from this program. Her brother is very excited to jump into the program as soon as he can. I am much more relaxed about him going on the trip now knowing what an incredible and safe program it is. I am extremely proud of my daughter and all the hard work that she did in Fiji. She will take this incredible experience with her for the rest of her life.
