Beacon of Hope Uganda

I spent four weeks in Uganda, volunteering with Beacon of Hope Uganda. They were incredibly helpful in every other way. They picked me up from the airport and the accommodation and food was fine and fruits are delicious.

The resources are scarce for many local projects it seems to be the prime limiting factor for making progress.

Volunteering in Uganda was truly an amazing experience. Absolutely loved everything about the organization and would recommend it to everyone, regardless of where you're from or what you do for a living, they are affordable and very grassroots.

Global Leadership Adventures (GLA)

My daughter went on a trip last year with GLA to Costa Rica. At first we were nervous about our her going so far as a 15 year old, but GLA was great and it ended up being a trip of a lifetime. The GLA advisors, Jackie, was very patient and informative with all my questions. They were completely on the ball at every step of the way and made us feel very comfortable as parents. The volunteer work with local school system was great for our daughter, but even more, the immersive cultural experience with like-minded teens from various places and backgrounds was irreplaceable. She has become an ambassador going with GLA to Peru this year and we're excited for her and the impact these trips are having on her world view, life experiences, learning and self esteem. We felt very comfortable working with Global Leadership Adventures and can not wait to see what future adventures our daughter has with GLA!

Don Quijote

I enrolled both my children in the Don Quijote Summer Spanish program held in Barcelona. This program is affiliated with Enforex, and once you are at the school it is Enforex that is there.

To begin with this is a very expensive course and I do believe you can find better run classes for a lot less money.

My kids were 13 years old and 16 years old. There is a lot of free time and the few organized games/activities were too young for early teens. The older teenagers had the option to leave the camp, so free trip was more enjoyable for them.

The students are mixed in the other students that are there to learn English, so if your goal is to be emersed in Spanish, that didn't happen. Everyone was speaking English.

My biggest complain was in the sanitary conditions of the camp. While my children attended there was a flu epidemic, over 30 students were ill plus some of the staff. Unfortunately my son was one of the ones that fell ill.

As a parent, I would NEVER recommend this camp to another family. The treatment my son received would be grounds for the facility to be shut down in the US.

Both my kids learned more Spanish during the time we spend traveling through Spain, than in the camp classroom. Save your money and go visit the beautiful smaller towns in Spain and practice your Spanish there.

Global Leadership Adventures (GLA)

i spent 14 days in chiang mai working with elephants at a tourist home. there we discussed the issues elephants are faced with in thailand and ways we can help. our service work centered around the elephants and consisted of things such as cutting grass for them, building dams to help with flooding in the town we were in, taking the elephants to the river to bathe, feeding them and cleaning after them in the morning. the GLA staff both local and international were awesome, they were very helpful but also fun and entertaining. the food was incredible and our home base at thai elephant home was beautiful. this was a once in a lifetime experience and an unforgettable trip. we met high school student at a local schools and became friends with them in a couple hours in less than a day. we played soccer with the mahouts and performed a very cringy talent show. this was a very fun and eye opening trip and i am very glad i got to go on it and meet some great people as well.

Projects Abroad

I had a great experience with Projects Abroad. My parents were a little worried about security and the political situation the country I would volunteer in would be so I picked Peru and it was a great choice! Projects Abroad always made sure we were happy and if we wanted to do change something in our schedule all we had to do was ask! They were very welcoming. I met so many great people like my host family, other volunteers and the staff. Not only did I volunteer but we visited Peru and its various cultural sights. Overall I had a great time and I would definitely do it again!
