Very memorable experience. My friend and I both did IVHQ programs but seperately (she went to Ghana and seemed to love it - I am thinking of going there next year). My favourite pieces of the trip were the home stay with the hill tribes and the children we taught (I grew a little too attached to some of them!). Advice for future volunteers would be to pack appropriately (follow the packing list they give you) and book your flight to arrive in Chiang Rai on the morning of orientaion. That way you are picked up from the airport by the staff and makes it your start much easier. I know some other volunteers arrived on the weekends when they do not provide airport pick ups and these volunteers were not that happy about it. I flew Air Asia from Bangkok to Chiang Rai and it was very cheap!

I would recommend IVHQ - they are well organized and helped me prepare more than adequately. One of the big draws to them was their low fees. I felt other companies were too expensive and simply could not afford to go with other companies. I also heard some bad stories from other companies when doing research prior to choosing the company I went with and IVHQ's feedback all seemed to be very positive. Go with IVHQ - you will have a good time. Mary.
Mary, thank you for your review. I am looking into volunteering in Thailand in the beginning of 2210. I am a 52 year old male who feel the need to take off the suit and contribute to a country in need. I am a health care professional (31 years) and will have 6 months + to dedicate to this goal. Can you give me any additional info on your experience in Thailand and with HVHQ. I reviewed the CCS program and although the org. seems organized the costs are high. Can you or anyone give me additional insight? Mark Brennan Florida, USA

Great program - really professional from first time I enquired till when I left the program in Costa Rica. IVHQ did everything I needed to get me prepared and the program in Costa Rica was run extremely well. A lot of volunteers were there at the time and Maximo were efficient and seemed to manage everything. Highlights are endless, but found the work very good and price was great compared to what other companies had their volunteers paying that i met. Maybe an increase staff is my only suggestion but I think the program has grown quicker than they aniticpated due to popularity and after talking to local workers, this seemed to be high on the priority list. Aside from that, cannot fault it and highly recommend it. If you are considering ivhq costa rica program then do it - you will have a great time.

I have been asked to give a review of the Ostional Project for work with Turtles at the Wildlife refuge there in affiliation with Maximo Nivel's program in the center of San Pedro, San Jose. I want to say that despite past reviews which I believe to be inadequately informed, the program I went on was worth my time, very well researched, and something I will remember for a long time. The center itself in Ostional was clean and comfortable, with a staff of people who were there for whatever you needed. Especially Yamilete, who is the chef and in charge of cleaning the facilities, was a wonderful person. We were fully oriented as to what we would be helping to do there before we set out every night to help with the turtles. There is a dispute between the town and the MINAE project over the distribution of the eggs there, and I wanted to really understand how I felt about both sides of the contraversy before I fully committed myself to the project. However, I believe that the scientific project to determine whether helping the egg hatching process is beneficial to the overall success of the turtle's survival is indeed a worthwhile endeavour, because before their presence over harvesting was occuring to sustain the town's well being, and it was destroying the environment and the turtle's survival rate. I think the project has an honorable place there, and if anything will completely prevent the place from being overrun by tourism, which will really destroy the environment. I was taught many things about the turtle's life cycles and their presence there, and the work I did was truly beautiful and worthwhile. I applaud both MINAE and Maximo Nivel for their continued efforts to help with a very important environmental issue and for providing their volunteers with the most conscientious and fun experience imaginable.

I just got back from 1 months stay in Costa Rica. I volunteered in rennovation/construction in Carpio, which is one the poorest areas in Costa Rica. I was very satisfied with my project site, where we had to rebuild the back wall/foundation of a church. The church also served as a daycare for the local kids to play and learn English. During our off times, we got to interact and bond with the children. Everything was amazing, and beyond my expectations. My host family was very sweet and and i made life long friends with my roomates and at my site. Maximo Nivel was very supportive and informative whenever i had any questions or concerns. Maximo made it clear to us during orientation that if we were not satisfied at any time with our site placement, they would have no problem changing our location. I highly reccomend IVHQ to anyone who is looking to volunteer abroad. The prices are exceptionally reasonable and the service is great. Everyone was always very pleasant and friendly at Maximo. All my emails with questions to IVHQ/Maximo were answered promptly and i never felt like a burden. This was a great experience!

I also did the turtle project through Maximo Nivel for two weeks and had an amazing experience, quite contrary to the other review.
I found Maximo Nivel to be very sufficiently informed about the projects they sent me to and so so willing to help with any questions or concerns you had. In regards to the refund situation, when you pay you have to accept the conditions which clearly state there is no refund if a volunteer changes their mind.
The project itself was great. Ostional is a very complicated place with so many factors coming into play. The work we did there was research into the best way for locals and turtles to live sustainably. The staff there are very friendly and are very aware of the the species best interest.
I can understand how someone might get the wrong idea about the place and become frustrated at the situation they have gotten them self into but if you just take the time to listen to the reasons behind the harvesting and willing to help where you can rather than form your own judgements without enough information, I cant imagine how you wont have a great time!
